Was there ever any extension to GM “or is there?” any way to adress a specific synth over a “single midicablechain / midithru chain” by the ID of synth/module/device?

What was the idea behind a midi ID of a device if you cannot specifically use it to adress a specific synth. As i understand it a midichain is/was just used when one sat multiple devices on midi thru chain and assigned each hardware a channel they would listen to?

So what was the idea behind a ID? Was it for dumprequests or is it used in any way?

Yes, it’s mostly used in sysex dumps, so a device can recognize a dump with the id byte.
