        Hi

        A quick update..

        I managed to get automation working for ALL parameters using the Ctrlr VST and the loaded Panel! You were quite correct, the problem was with the overrides file. I discovered that the TextEdit app on Mac isn’t that great at creating XML files. You have to name the file with a .xml at the end for it to save it as an XML file, rather than plain text but then it had created a file called ctrlr.overrides.xml. Once I removed the XML extension and reloaded Live I could successfully automate all parameters. Yes!

        I also tested some of the exported VST instances and this approach doesn’t seem like it will solve the problem of saving parameters as each VST loaded with the same settings, so I’m hoping there’s something that can be done to allow the correct saving of parameters, particularly patches and Outs for each Ctrlr instance I have in my Live project as at present I have to load them for each project. Now that I can automate all parameters there’s perhaps no need to use the exported instance?

        Cheers, Jon

          Cheers Hugo

          Let me know if there’s anything I can do to assist, is there anything more we can try with the overrides file on Mac OSX? A different directory or parameters?

          Is the point of an exported instance to embed the Panel into Ctrlr as if it were a VST? I’ll test multiple instances of these and see if this approach works out

          Thanks again, Jon

            Hi again, how’s it going?

            I’ve had some more studio time, so thought I’d do some more testing on the Virus Ti Panel to try and iron out these last couple of issues.

            1. Saving Panel Parameters in a Saved Live Project

            This is the main issue I’d love to see addressed as at the moment although I can have multiple Panels, each on an Ableton track there is a process to work through each and every time I open the Live project.

            At present the panel saves the selected patches in each Panel on individual Live tracks in Ableton, however when first opening each panel they are all set to part 1. The solution to this is to select the part required for that particular patch and change the selected Out to another value and back to the intended value before hitting Send to send the patch and Out to the Virus, which will otherwise boot with the default patches. Also when the panel loads within the Virus project it forgets which bank was selected, in my case with external banks. Now it comes up with (no selection) and numbers 0-127 each blank.

            2 Automation working for only some parameters using the Ctrlr VST with a loaded Panel.

            In Live once I click on the down arrow in the panel instance and then click configure I can automate: everything on the OSC page, except Ring Mod. I can also automate Filter 1 parameters on the Filter page, but can’t automate Filter 2, Envelope, Amp or Amp envelope. I can’t automate anything on the LFO, Matrix, FX1, FX2 and Common pages or any of the Panel’s headings for different pages.

            When I open the Ctrlr panel and look at EDIT > PREFERENCES I can see that the Max Exported VST Params value is 64. (I have the overrides file in the correct directory.)

            I try changing this value to 600 and I can still only automate the same items in the panel.

            So I now try exporting the instance into a VST, rescan in Live and drop it into a Midi track. I can now automate the Panel’s menu headings, e.g., Browser, Osc, Filter etc. It looks like I can automate everything! What were the parameters that couldn’t be automated in Virus Control?

            I’ll do some further testing to see if I see any of the odd behaviour you’ve seen e.g, combo buttons are messed up and the patch is not sent correctly to the Virus with the Exported VST instance. Are there any other implications of using a VST exported instance? What is saved in the instance? All parameters? Outs? Patches?

            Maybe using this exported VST instance is the solution for resolving the automation issue?

            Many thanks, hope to hear from you soon, Jon

              Hi there dasfaker

              Well I finally figured out what was going on! The good news is that the panels Outs are just fine!! I now have 6 mono outs working great in Live 🙂 except I run out of DSP power on patch 5 or 6! (TI1) it seemed I had a feedback loop via SPDIF that was causing the issue and now I’m syncing Live to the Virus over Midi cable I don’t need SPDIF anymore so problem solved 🙂

              As you suggested when I open the live project I do need to load the patches into each of the 6 panel instances for their corresponding parts and reselect the outs by changing the Out to another value and back to the preferred out for that Part. But I can then play multiple virus patches simultaneously using Push and a Midi keyboard, wicked! I just name the clips in live with their patch names to help me remember. It would be the icing in the cake to be able to save selected patches and outs but this might just be a limitation?

              So much fun playing the Virus now with the TR-8 all in sync, really amazing and quite stable 🙂 I had the Virus crash quite often using VC requiring a reboot of the Virus. I haven’t had to do that once with the panel!!

              I haven’t yet figured out how I can use the lemur program change template to work on the armed track only, work in progress on that one. Also haven’t yet spent any more time trying to figure out the parameter automation issue, but will focus on that next. This is kinda of the final hurdle as I’ll be able to play lots of virus parts and record automation just like VC only better if we can figure this out.

              Every once in a while I will get an LUA error, for example creating a new library, but I’ll do some more testing here and let you know.

              Can’t thank you enough for your work, this is really going to help Virus uses sick of sync issues and pops to use their beloved machines!

                Had a wicked Easter party with a live Virus set running your panel 🙂

                So tested this on the standalone version of Ctrlr with the Virus in Sequencer Mode.

                It looks like the selected Outs selected in the 4.3.2 panel match the Sysex to those sent from Multi Edit on the Virus Ti…and yet all the L or R options play in stereo. Makes me wonder if the Virus patches selected in some way are forcing stereo??!

                Out 1, Out 1 L&R, Out 1 R all get routed as Stereo to the inputs 3 and 4 on my interface.

                Out 2, Out 2 L&R, Out 2 R all get routed as Stereo to the inputs 5 and 6 on my interface.

                Out 3, Out 3 L&R, Out 3 R all get routed as Stereo to the inputs 7 and 8 on my interface.

                I can for example select Out 1 L, which plays over inputs 3 & 4 on my interface, pull out the No 3 TRS input cables from the back of the Virus and see that the correct channel 3 drops off. Same for all channels.

                Here’s the Outs from the panel selecting Out 1 L through to Out 3 R

                Same?

                So a bit stuck on this one?! Is there any setting in the Virus that you’re aware of that would override the selected Out to force stereo? My interface is configured to use these outputs as Mono each. Puzzled!!

                I can change the Out on the Virus Ti itself from Out 1 L, to Out 1 L&R and Out 1 R and they all which play over inputs 3 & 4 on my interface, all in stereo, although it looks like each input is receiving the same mono signal as there is no panning or difference in the VU meters on these 2 inputs.

                I can also confirm that when I change the Outs through Multi Edit on the Virus that the Outs displayed on the Virus now match what’s displayed on the Ctrlr panel. Sweet 🙂

                I Notice in the Panel’s LCD display that is says:

                “Access Virus Ti Ctrlr Editor – VC Version” – a minor point but just wanted to mention as not using VC at all.

                Hey! I tried changing the value of Midi>Input>Device in Ctrlr to the relevant Lemur Daemon port 0. I had this set to my Midi port on my Interface which is routed through to the Virus, thinking this was required to enable automation, but can confirm automation still works when I make this change. So I can still tweak knobs on the Virus and see the Panels browser respond. But now have my Lemur template able to control Program Change and it works super sweet! Thanks

                So I now hop over the Live and see about the ability to record parameters:

                I now realise I did need to have of Midi>Input>Device in Ctrlr set to my interfaces midi port where my virus is attached to in order for the Panel to respond to knob tweaks. I can use Daemon 0 from Lemur under the Controller section however, so program change works well in Live using the iPad and Lemur program change template.

                I tried the various parts 1-6 and Outs Out 1 L – Out 3 R again in Live with the Virus in both Sequencer and Multi Mode and get the same results as the standalone. Whats should be individual outs seems L or R are always routed to the L&R simultaneously. Odd. Any ideas?

                When I try and automate parameters everything seems to work on the OSC tab and on the Filter 1 section (but not the rest of the Filter Tab) will be detected by Live (Arrow on Panel then Configure), but Live doesn’t recognise any other items on the panel. Sounds very much like what you were describing about the overrides? Have 600 set in this in the VST folder. When I try and automate clicking the Panels tabs live doesn’t recognise them, just moves to the selected tab.

                Thanks, hope that helps, nearly a perfect Virus panel!

                Jon

                  Hi dasfaker, happy Easter!

                  Thanks for the 4.3.1 build. Loading of external banks now works for different Parts, nice work!

                  Understand that the Sysex codes are now different controlling the Outs without VC, but they seem to be sent to incorrect Outs:

                  Out 1 L – Goes to Out 1 L&R, labelled Off in the Panel display
                  Out 1 L&R – Goes to Out 1 L&R labelled Out 1 L in the Panel display
                  Out 1 R – Goes to Out 1 L&R labelled Out 1 L&R in the Panel display
                  Out 2 L – Goes to Out 2 L&R labelled Out 1 R in the Panel display
                  Out 2 L&R – Goes to Out 2 L&R labelled Out 2 L in the Panel display
                  Out 2 R – Goes to Out 2 L&R labelled Out 2 L&R in the Panel display
                  Out 3 L – Goes to Out 3 L&R labelled Out 2 R in the Panel display
                  Out 3 L&R – Goes to Out 3 L&R labelled Out 3 L in the Panel display
                  Out 3 R – Goes to Out 3 L&R labelled Out 3 L&R in the Panel display

                  In theory I should be able to get 6 mono outs from the Virus right?

                  I’ve tested this on 4.3.1 using the standalone and VST (Mac) version in Live and get the same result, trying both Multi and Sequencer mode on the Ti.

                  I love the Arp dragging feature! Very cool!

                  Do you think atom have another view on the ctrlr overrides file as I still haven’t been able to get some of the parameters to automate in Live?

                  I wonder if there might be a way to send a program change message from my iPad to Ctrlr? I use a Program Change template in Lemur which works well to send the program change message to various VSTs. It has 99 (not 128) buttons to allow direct access to various patches. Can you see of any way that I could do that with the Virus Ctrlr panel? I can router Midi from the iPad to a Lemur Daemon on the Mac which passes the instructions to the VST etc.

                  Thanks again, Jon

                    Also I can load external bank patches into part 1, but no other parts, only internal RAM banks. When I try and select an external bank patch using part 2 and above as soon as I click on the name of the external bank patch the information panel at the bottom of the Panel indicates “Patch received” but it names the patch that is currently loaded. No problem loading RAM banks patches into these parts however. Any ideas?

                      Hi again

                      Testing has been going well and delighted to report that the multiple outs are now working without Virus Control! Well kind of! Have now got three separate tracks in Live each with a Ctrlr instance with different parts, routed to different outs. I then realised that the Virus patches I was using were mono, so figured wouldn’t it be great if I could get 6 independent tracks working in mono from the Virus. I think there’s possibly still a bug in the Sysex? There’s now no Off option for the Part’s Out.

                      Using the standalone version here’s the Sysex from the panel. Note there is no Off when selecting the Part’s Out in the panel any longer:

                      So comments on this release for the Virus Ti:

                      4.2.2 Switching Part change midi input and output channels accordingly.

                      Can now select multiple Outs but the Sysex looks offset by 1 value.

                      4.2.3 Output parameter now assigned to Multi Part output instead of Sequencer Part output, as Sequencer Part output only works with VC.

                      Well other than the Out Sysex routing issue it seems to work in Sequencer mode in Live or Standalone!

                      4.2.4 The panel now selects “Midi Thru” and “Plugin options” settings on startup.

                      This is a great help and saves a lot of hassle on load. Cheers!

                      4.3.0 Added dragging to Arpeggiator screen

                      Haven’t tried this yet.

                      Also I’ve been persevering trying to automate the Panel’s parameters in Live. I can automate things on the OSC and Filter page, but not for example the LFO or any of the Tabs. Back to the overrides issue perhaps – I have ctrlrMaxExportedVstParameters=”600″ in the overrides file.

                      Great progress, hopefully we can get these last issue sorted 🙂 Thanks

                        Awesome, thanks, will try the new build later tonight and report back.

                          So taking this back to basics. Let’s forget Ableton for a bit and see if I can get the standalone version working with multiple parts to different outs. Is that possible?

                          I didn’t realise there was a new panel, so upgraded to 4.2.2 on Ctrlr 1590 on Virus Ti 5.0.8.00. I’ve tried to get two patches playing using Out 1 L&R and Out 2 L&R from my Virus. Still cant only get one patch playing to Out 1 L&R

                          https://www.dropbox.com/s/hrjvvwfj5be9m3l/Ctrlr%20Standalone%20Cant%20Change%20Parts.mov

                          I did also try automating the tabs in Live, and after clicking the down arrow on the Ctrlr device, Clicking configure I can successfully select the Cutoff for example and Live will detect this and allow me to automate the Cutoff. Whenever I try to select any of the tabs, Browser, OSC, Filter etc Live doesn’t detect it to automate.

                            OK, so now I think I understand get/send, but now I don’t understand if it’s possible to load up several instances of Ctrlr each with a panel loaded. You mentioned that only 1 part can be played simultaneously, but I can’t get more than one part to play at all.

                            I have three tracks in Live each with a Ctrlr panel and each setup with a different part, each with a different patch. I arm the first track, part 1, plays fine. I arm the 2nd track using part 2 and a different patch, remember only Out 1 L&R seem to work. Play now and track 1 and track 2 still play the patch selected for the first part as they are all routed to Out 1 L&R?

                              Hi again

                              Got distracted with a loaned TR-8! Using the virus panel running at 96Khz I can integrate them both in Sync. Nice!

                              The panel doesn’t respond when changing parts on the virus and if the 2nd part is selected it will still play the patch loaded into the first part routed to Out 1 L&R. Is there any series of tests I can help with?

                                Hi dasfaker

                                I can repeat these tests later tonight. I haven’t yet been able to change parts to use different outs, even though the Sysex for the outs looks the same and the virus shows ‘se’ indicating its receiving Sysex presumably? Makes me second guess routing, but when for example I change the Out away from Out 1 L&R to something else, whilst still monitoring this Out in Live it keeps playing as if I hadn’t changed the out.

                                I haven’t been able to get more than one patch working with different parts, and experimented with using the get button, but not clear on the steps here, but sounds like user error!

                                Is it:

                                Click part 1, select patch, click get
                                Click part 2, select patch, click get etc?

                                Tried using configure to automate the panel tab selection, but no joy, would be a great feature to add back in sometime!

                                  Hope that helps?

                                  I was using two different midi monitors and the 00 at the beginning was just an intended copy paste. Does this make more sense?

                                  I tried Midi mapping in Live (cmd-m) and when selecting the different tabs of the panel but couldn’t get the Live to recognise the tabs using Configure or Midi Map. I’d like to map my computer keyboard to the various panel tabs labels eg

                                  O – OSC
                                  A – Arp
                                  F – FX1
                                  X – FX2 etc

                                  That would be super quick for live performance

                                      Hey, wow 🙂

                                      New panel working really sweet, OSC 3, LFO3, Matrix, Arp, Fx all reacting to the Virus!!! Yes!! Thank you!! Will give it a good test tonight 🙂

                                      Works on Out 1 L&R (TRS). What I love about this is the ability to set my interface at 96Khz with Virus @ 48K rather than 44.1K on USB 🙂 Can’t get it to play on other outs though…

                                      Was able to get this from the Virus’s Surround Menu, but as no USB is plugged maybe it doesn’t show any USB outs?

                                      Got this from selecting the Out in the panel, from Off to USB 2 R

                                        OMG! I’ve just had a 3.5 Hr Jam, without the virus crashing once and all in Sync!!!! 🙂

                                          Hi again

                                          So the AU and VST appear identical. Now I’ve turned the Mix of the Phaser up all the GUI elements responded.

                                          Some aspects of various sections of the panel dont seem to respond to knobs; likely still the problem where we need to figure out how to increase the panels modulators?

                                          OSC 1 Type: Can change on Virus and hear the resulting difference, not reflected in panel, changing this on the panel doesn’t change the OSC type on the virus, but does send Midi to the Virus
                                          OSC 3 (I can change these on the virus and hear the difference)
                                          Unison
                                          Matrix: Panel reflects how Virus is setup for the patch, changes to the virus can be heard, but not reflected in the panel
                                          Arp: Turning on the Arp in the panel doesn’t invoke the Arp on the Virus. Turning on the Arp on the virus doesn’t change the panel.
                                          FX1: Not much other than Chorus seems to work.
                                          FX2: Delay seems to work, Reverb doesn’t.
                                          Common: Selecting outputs. Same result as previous post.

                                          All so tantalisingly close to a wicked Virus synced setup!

                                          How can we try and figure out the overrides issue?

                                            If you recall I’m trying to get multiple tracks in live each with a Ctrlr instance, each configured to use different parts.

                                            Here’s more detail of the problem I have selecting the outputs in the panel. At the moment I dont have any more analog output options. No matter what output is selected The Virus still outputs on Out 1 L&R.

                                            For the AU and VST versions on Mac:

                                            These Panel Outputs all seems correct:

                                            Output = Off
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Off

                                            Output = Out 1 L
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out 1 L

                                            Output = Out 1 L&R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out 1 & 2

                                            Output = Out 1 R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out 1 R

                                            These Panel Outputs have appear to select different outputs:

                                            Output = Out 2 L
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 1 L

                                            Output = Out 2 L&R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 1 L&R

                                            Output = Out 2 R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 1 R

                                            Output = Out 3 L
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 2 L

                                            Output = Out 3 L&R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 2 L&R

                                            Output = Out 3 R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 2 R

                                            Output = USB 1 L
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 3 L

                                            Output = USB 1 L&R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 3 L&R

                                            Output = USB 1 R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out USB 3 R

                                            Then

                                            Output = USB 2 L
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out (Nothing More)

                                            Output = USB 2 L&R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out (Nothing More)

                                            Output = USB 2 R
                                            Panel’s Message GUI: Multi Part Parameter Output Select Out (Nothing More)

                                            There is no option in the panel for USB 3 L / L&R / R in the AU or VST version.

                                            The standalone version allows Out 1 L / L&R / R which appears to select the correct Output, but selecting Out 2 or Out 3 doesn’t appear to select these Outs. But then again I havent placed an override file anywhere to adjust the standalone version.
