Naveen Dittakavi, founder and CEO of Next Vacay comments: “Now more than ever, travelers are looking for more flexibility when booking flights. We found there was a staggering 400% increase in searches for cancellable flights and refundable tickets. Here are some things to look out for when canceling your flight. If your travel plans aren’t rock-solid make sure to book a refundable ticket. These tickets are at a higher price point but are a good option if you’re uncertain about your travel plans. Most airlines have their version of a ‘basic economy ticket, which usually doesn’t offer much flexibility in terms of canceling or changing a flight.”

Travel insurance can cover costs if you need to cancel your trip. However, these are usually under very specific circumstances such as illness or injury. Make sure you read the fine print on what’s included on your travel insurance when you buy it.” Call Spirit Cancellation

5 Tips For Dealing With a Trip Cancellation

Understand the covered reasons for canceling a trip.

People who buy travel insurance that includes trip cancellation benefits sometimes assume that it’s “cancel for any reason” insurance — they think they can call off a trip for any reason and get their money back. That’s not how trip cancellation benefits work, however. Don’t cancel your trip before finding out if your lost expenses will be covered by your travel insurance!

  • Make sure you meet the stated requirements for trip cancellation.: On the morning of your planned departure for Costa Rica, you wake up with chills, nausea, and a fever. You’re feeling so terrible that you decide to cancel the trip. You’ll get your money back — right?
  • Do your best to reschedule cancelled flights.: Sometimes, a trip starts off on the wrong foot when bad weather or some other emergency delays your departure. If your flight is canceled, or you’re otherwise delayed, don’t give up on your trip right away! You need to make all reasonable efforts to start, catch up to, or continue your journey.
  • Our 24-hour hotline assistance team may be able to help you find an alternate way to get to your destination. Your trip cancellation benefits can even reimburse you for the reasonable cost of the alternate transportation, less available refunds, as well as the cost of any lost prepaid accommodations caused by your delayed arrival (less available refunds).
  • Remember that travel insurance can help if your travel companion has to cancel.: What if you’ve planned a week-long cruise with your sister, and she’s the one who gets seriously ill the morning of your departure? The illness of a traveling companion can be a covered reason for trip cancellation (subject to the same requirements, as described in your policy). However, you don’t have to cancel your trip! If your sister stays home, trip cancellation benefits can reimburse you for extra accommodation fees the cruise line might charge (such as a single supplement fee) if you prepaid for a shared cabin.
  • Document everything.: To file a trip cancellation claim, you’ll need to submit documentation that shows why your trip was cancelled and the total amount you need to be reimbursed. Save every email and piece of paper related to your trip, including:
    • Receipts and itemized bills for all expenses.
    • Original of any refunds or expense allowances received from your tour operator, travel agency, travel supplier, resort, property management company or other entity.
    • A copy of your resort invoice/vacation rental contract or confirmation.
    • Any appropriate documentation that officially explains the cause of your trip cancellation or interruption.
    • Any explanation of medical diagnosis along with your original itemized bills, receipts and proof of other insurance payments.
    • Original unused tickets, copies of invoices, proof of payments and other documents that substantiate the cost or occurrence of the trip cancellation or interruption.
    • Documentation of refunds received.
    • A copy of the supplier’s literature that describes penalties.
    • A letter from the tour operator or an itemized bill from the travel agent stating the non-refundable amounts of the trip costs.

I first noticed this change on a SEA-PDX-PHX flight and thought it was a glitch because of my nonstop Seattle-Portland flight within the reservation. However, I noticed it again when checking in for my return flight Phoenix-Seattle.

  • The passengers are requested to understand that we are willing to provide the best service possible. And we do not claim that the exchange procedure is exhaustive in all terms. The exchange ticket policy is totally based on the vacancy of the seats at the very moment.
  • To make it easier for you, let us apprise you that the exchange ticket policy is more flexible in the offseason. Apart from Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year, we can affirm that the chances of exchanging the flight ticket are high. We suggest you make an early call for this procedure in order to avoid disappointment.

Airlines are offering major deals on fall flights from Alaska to Europe

United, American, Delta,The big sale on airline tickets to Europe is back_00000

Right now, all three mega-airlines — AmericanDelta and United — are offering good fares from both Anchorage and Fairbanks to Europe.

United’s deals drop off from Fairbanks next month, but Delta flies year-round from Fairbanks and Anchorage. American partners with Alaska Airlines on many of the trans-Atlantic flights. United offers year-round service from Anchorage via its daily Anchorage-Denver nonstop.

Some of these entry-level bargains to Europe are compelling: Anchorage-Madrid for $294 round trip, for example. Or Anchorage-Athens for $303 round trip. Both of these low-end bargains are offered by American Airlines. But there’s more to the story.

Remember: Airlines these days lure you in with a low base price, then tack on the extras. If you want a pre-assigned seat, it will cost you. If you want to check a bag, it will cost you. If you want a seat with extra legroom like an exit row, that will cost you.

Still, those add-ons will cost you no matter the base fare. So, a lower base fare is good.

Right now, American Airlines has the cheapest fares to Europe. The lowest of the low fares are for travel next month, in October.

Here are some of my favorite rates:

  • Anchorage-Dublin: $287 round trip on Alaska and American Airlines. Travel Oct. 16-23. If you don’t want to travel on these dates, other dates are available for $319-$355 round trip. Book at American’s website. Fly from Fairbanks to Dublin for $289 round trip between Oct. 3 and Oct. 12.
  • Anchorage/Fairbanks-Madrid: $294 round trip on Alaska and American Air. Travel between Oct. 5 and Oct. 29. Other dates are available between now and Feb. 26 for $350 round trip.
  • Anchorage/Fairbanks-Athens for $303-$305 round trip. The best rates are available between Oct. 3 and Oct. 29 on American. After that, the prices go up a little bit, to around $366 round trip.
  • Call ✆ Reservations Team: (888) 660-1594

It makes a difference where you book the tickets. In my research, Google Flights offers a good overview of the flights, with a link to a website where you can purchase the tickets. A link to the American Airlines website doesn’t mean all the flights are on American. They could be on Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, or any other Oneworld partner.

If you’re headed to Spain, there are many other destinations besides Madrid that are on sale: Barcelona (from $343 round trip) and Malaga (from $354 round trip) also are on sale. Nearby Lisbon, Portugal, is on sale for as little as $361 round trip (for October travel).

The airlines are mum on why the prices are so low. It’s not unusual to see fares to Europe drop to the $400-$500 level once or twice a year. But to see prices drop below $300 round trip is remarkable. It also underscores how soft the demand is for air travel this fall. Most airlines have reduced their predictions of how many people will travel this fall during a resurgence of COVID-19.

Most frequent travelers will not pay the lowest available fare. For example, from Anchorage to Rome, the cheapest fare displayed by American Airlines is $311 round trip. Pre-assigned seats cost extra, though. And your first checked bag is $150. However, if you choose “main cabin” for an extra $150, you get to pre-select your tiny coach seat. And you get one checked bag free. And if you’re an Alaska Airlines elite (MVP or MVP Gold), you can access the “Main Cabin Extra” seats with extra legroom.

If you want to take a quick trip to Europe, remember that entry requirements are changing. You may need to prove you’ve received your COVID-19 vaccination. You probably will need to get tested prior to departure. And you’ll need to make arrangements to get tested once again before returning to the U.S. Check American’s website for a country-by-country breakdown of entry requirements.

If you don’t want to use your passport, there are plenty of good deals available stateside.

One of my favorites is Anchorage-Fort Myers, Florida. Fly from Anchorage to Fort Myers for $101 right away on Delta. There’s no advance purchase. You could get on the plane tomorrow morning. Travel between now and May. From Fairbanks, the price is a little more: $118 one-way.

Flights from Anchorage to New York are really cheap. Fly right away for $116 one-way on American or Alaska Airlines. If you can wait a couple of weeks, the price goes down to $106 one-way. The prices stay low until Feb. 16. Fares are cheaper from Fairbanks. Fly to New York for as little as $98 one-way on Delta.Call ✆ Reservations Team: (888) 660-1594

From Anchorage to Kansas City, the price is really low: $112 one-way on Alaska or Delta, starting in October. It’s a little more if you want to fly right away: $140 one-way. That’s still a nice price.

Don’t forget about Seattle. It’s $89 one-way with either Alaska or Delta, starting Sept. 25. The cheap fare is available through Feb. 28.

When I started checking the Europe fares early in the week, United had the lowest rates. The next day, Delta jumped on board with the lowest rates. Then American dropped the rates again on Thursday, So, after checking the rates on Thursday evening, I won’t be surprised if they changed again.

All fares are subject to change without notice. If you see a fare you like, buy it. You have 24 hours to change your mind. You’ll get a full refund, as mandated by federal regulations.

What is Delta’s allergy policy?

Travelers with Disabilities: However, I would warn you that just because corporate says something, does not mean that everybody is going to comply equally, nor be educated equally, about what food allergies are, how severe they are, and what level of liability the airline and staff need to take.

No Nut Traveler There are stories about things that can go wrong, and thankful ones when things go right.

Always be vigilant and prepared, bring your own epinephrine with additional doses, and have your doctor’s note, call ahead to the airlines, talk to the airline customer services, talk to the airline staff stationed at the airport, talk to the airline staff at the gate desk, and talk to the flight attendants on your flight.

Be prepared to handle problems and decide what your comfort level is, if you need to deplane, clean seats, bring protective coverings and wipes, request assistance in-flight, etc. Don’t back down, but don’t be too aggressive. This may be a solid understanding from you, but it can be very new to the flight crew. Don’t take out undeserved frustration directly with them, unless they really are the cause. Be sure to print out and quote the corporate policy and any supportive information from other airline staff you have spoken with.

How do I get out of paying Delta a $200 flight change fee for a trip I wasn’t able to take?

Delta Air Lines Reviews: I once had to reschedule two days before my flight because my husband caught the flu. I tried online and they showed a $200 change fee. I read these posts and tried calling Delta. The thing I like about Delta is that they actually believe in customer care. The first offer to call me instead of keeping me on hold for long. Next, the agent did not ask any questions, readily agreed to change my flight for free. All he needed was the name of the doctor I planned to take my husband to. We did not even go to the doctor because our family doctor told us it will get better with time. I would also advise, please call them for whatever you want to change.

I am adding another incident to this answer. Once, I was not able to take the flight due to a change of plans. The customer care agent on the phone told me cancellation would not be free. That day, all their flights were full and people were placed on waiting. They were selling tickets for my flight at 3 times the regular fare. So, I went online and requested a cancellation and refund. In the reason field, I mentioned I do not plan to take this flight. Please cancel my reservation and accept my refund request as I do not want your seat to go vacant while the flights are full. Surprisingly, in a week, I got my full money back! I did not see this coming. Delta customer care rocks!

Best time to go Chicago

Spring (April to the end of May) and fall (September to the end of October) are both excellent times to visit Chicago, thanks to pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

Fall is especially nice, with daily temperatures averaging 60-70°F (15-21°C). You need to pack a sweater for this time of year, but tourist attractions are less crowded and hotel/hostel rooms are cheaper.

Summer (June-August) is the peak season in Chicago. It’s hot, with temperatures reaching the mid-80s°F (high 20s°C), and tourist crowds are at their highest. Although it’s nice to take advantage of the weather, keep in mind that prices increase for accommodations and vacancies are low. August can be rainy, so pack a light rain jacket.

Avoid visiting in winter unless you don’t mind some super cold days! The wind can be sharp during the winter months in Chicago, but if you want to do a lot of museum hopping or sightseeing indoors, you can save a lot of money on accommodations.

Chicago’s history is a big part of what makes it so unique. Taking a tour is definitely recommended if you want to learn about the city’s storied past, from the notorious gangsters to the famous buildings. Below are some of the most popular or unique tours on offer in the city.

Chicago Sightseeing Tours:

The four-hour Chicago Grand Half-Day Tour is the perfect way to be able to see and learn about the city’s most important landmark buildings and sights. The narrated coach tour takes a scenic route along the lake through Grant Park and past some of its most iconic attractions; drives down Chicago’s Magnificent Mile; and tours the South Side, where you can see President Obama’s former home.

For general sightseeing, the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus or Trolley Tour is the easiest and most convenient way to see the highlights of the city and to get oriented. For first-timers, this is a must. Get on and off at the sights that interest you, skip those that don’t, and learn a little history from this narrated tour.

If you are spending more than one day in the city, do this tour on day one to get the layout of the city and figure out where you might want to spend the rest of your time.

If you are visiting during the warmer months, consider taking a Segway Tour. These are small groups of just eight people and one guide. You will be given a short training session and then head off on a guided tour.

Chicago Special Interest Tours:

The Chicago Mob and Crime Tour is one of those unique tours that can only exist in certain cities, like Chicago. This tour takes you to sites associated with some of the city’s most notorious gangsters of the 20th century, including Al Capone and John Dillinger. Anyone who reads crime novels will love this tour.
During the summer months, check out the Chicago Architecture River Cruise. You don’t have to be an expert to appreciate the city’s fine buildings, and this 75-minute cruise is a great way to see and learn about Chicago’s architecture.

What are the best things to do in Chicago?

  • Millennium Park: The Chicago Loop’s art-filled urban park
    • Enter Chicago’s great “front lawn” – Millennium Park. The public space is where you can find some of the city’s most iconic scenery. Stroll through the blooming perennial Lurie Gardens, which are enclosed by a 15-foot-high hedge. Admire art installations along the tree-lined Chase Promenade, with different exhibitions held throughout the year. A must-see is Cloud Gate, fondly nicknamed “The Bean” for its shape. This giant sculpture features a smoothly polished mirror-like stainless steel surface, reflecting the skyscraper scene around it.
  • Navy Pier: A one-stop entertainment spot with an iconic Ferris wheel
    • The Navy Pier is a great spot for families to head to on Chicago’s Michigan lakefront. The pier juts out for over 3,000 ft into the lake and is filled with green spaces, shops, exhibitions, and restaurants. One of the pier’s main features that also dominates its skyline is the Centennial Wheel. This Ferris wheel is open daily, but the coolest experience must be during the Navy Pier Summer Fireworks that display in sync to music over Lake Michigan every Wednesday and Saturday.
  • Chicago Riverwalk: For a sightseeing trip through the heart of the city
    • Before the flows of the Chicago River meet Lake Michigan, it runs through most of The Loop. One of the best ways to see the city from up close is the Chicago Riverwalk, a gentrified waterfront path through downtown, along the river’s south bank. Start your walks from Lake Shore Drive and up to Lake Street. Along the way, you have plenty of restaurants, park gardens, and bridges, where you can pause and take in the high-rise city views.
  • Adler Planetarium: Travel through space, then back to Earth for Chicago’s sweeping skyline
    • Founded in 1930, Adler Planetarium is a monumental science facility occupying the north-eastern tip of Chicago’s Northerly Island. It has a vintage charm with its prominent planetarium dome and Art Deco exterior embellished with bronze zodiac reliefs. From inside the dome, you can travel through the universe through the Grainger Sky Theater’s digital projection. Scenic offerings outside include the 12th Street Beach, the boat docks of Burnham Harbor, and ultimately, the Skyline Walk from where you can take in the best views of Chicago.
  • Magnificent Mile: Chicago’s bustling commercial heart
    • If you’re looking for the most luxurious shopping scene in Chicago, head down to the Magnificent Mile. It’s part of North Michigan Avenue, where you can find a series of upscale shops, hip dining spots, and some of Chicago’s finest big-brand hotels, such as the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, The Conrad, and Park Hyatt. Grand malls here include Nordstrom, and Water Tower Place, which houses a Macy’s. Come in the summer and you can experience the Gardens of The Magnificent Mile festival, where its blooming planters are sometimes graced with designer fashion.
  • Skydeck Chicago: Enjoy thrilling city views from up high
    • This feature lets you literally stand on the edge of the 103rd-floor of one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, at over 1,300 feet high, overlooking the Chicago cityscape. You can get a good view from the Skydeck observatory, but the real highlight is the appropriately named ‘The Ledge’. You step into either of the 2 glass boxes which extend out, with your feet seemingly hovering over the dizzying heights below. Another similar sensation that lets you experience the heights over the city is 360 Chicago, a 94th-floor observatory at the John Hancock Building. Rather than stationery, its lookout is a tilting glass enclosure for added thrills.
  • Try Chicago-style pizza: The city’s signature deep-dish pie
    • When in Chicago, don’t miss out on trying the city’s signature pizza. They don’t do them thin-crusted here. Rather, Chicago-style pizza is a deep-dish preparation, using a deep pan with added toppings and cheese. One of the longstanding pizza houses where you can order the original pizza is Pizzeria Uno on East Ohio Street. They have a second branch, Pizzeria Due, on North Wabash Avenue. You can usually choose from cheese, sausage, pepperoni, or the Original Numero Uno, all of which come in 10-inch deep-dish sizes.
  • Chicago Theatre: Evenings out in Chicago for music or comedic acts
    • A high-rise Chicago landmark that features French Baroque architecture 7 stories tall, the Chicago Theatre is where you can watch the latest rock bands, Broadway musicals, as well as comedic acts perform. These range from hit TV musical series brought to life on-stage such as Bring It! Live, to performances of rock to synth-pop bands, and hilarious nights with wisecracking acts such as Russel Peters. Ticket prices vary per event and your chosen seating level, but start from around $40.

The large glass-walled observation deck has views that look out over Chicago’s skyline and beyond.
  13. More adventurous tourists will love the deck’s newest feature, “Tilt,” which gives visitors a unique view from more than 1,000 feet above the Magnificent Mile as they are tipped outward at an angle to look straight down from the glass enclosure.
  14. Take a Tour or See a Game at Wrigley Field: Wrigley Field, home to the Chicago Cubs, was built in 1914 and is the second-oldest Major League Baseball Park in the US, second only to Fenway Park in Boston. The Park has seen some legendary moments in baseball history, including the 1917 no-hitter pitching duel between the Cubs’ Jim Vaughn and the Reds’ Fred Toney, and Babe Ruth’s “called shot” during game three of the 1932 World Series.
  15. Lincoln Park: Lincoln Park is a six-mile stretch of green space along the edge of Lake Michigan, and Chicago’s biggest park. Sixteen different exhibits showcase the wonderful animals that we share this world with. Some of the most entertaining animals include penguins, otters, and seals. For a truly fascinating experience, stop by the Regenstein Center for African Apes.

This 12-story building has a Roman Revival and Queen Anne-style façade, but it is the central light court and the ornamental ironwork of the elegant staircases that are the true gem of the building.

Chicago is an expensive city, especially when it comes to attractions and accommodation. But, like any major city, there are always pockets of affordability if you know where to look. Here are some ways to save money in Chicago:

  • Get the Chicago City Pass – This pass allows you to over 50% off admission at a number of attractions. A 5-Choice Explorer pass is $124 USD and gets you entrance into five different attractions like the Shedd Aquarium, the Skydeck, the Field Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. There are options ranging from 2-Choice to 7-Choice and also an all-inclusive pass.
  • Redeem hotel points – Be sure to sign up for hotel credit cards before you go and use those points when you travel. Be aware that most hotels charge parking fees if you have a car, and adjust your budget accordingly.
  • Couchsurf – Couchsurfing is the best way to save money in Chicago. You’ll not only get a free place to stay but you get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips. It’s perfect for budget travelers who want to make connections.
  • Go on a free walking tour – This is a great way to learn the history behind the places you are seeing and to avoid missing any must-see stops. Free Chicago Walking Tours has several interesting walking tours that can show you the main sights. Just be sure to tip your guide!
  • Save money on rideshares – Uber, Via, and Lyft are way cheaper than taxis and are the best way to get around a city if you don’t want to take a bus or pay for a taxi.
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
