Features:

Librarian

Load and save patches and rhythms from the synth’s banks and from files in .syx format, and create new soundbanks with drag&drop of patches between banks.

Data Storage

Save the synth status (all data from Patch Mode, Performance Mode and Scale Tune) in a single .syx file.

DAW Automation

Every parameter of the sound engine of every part is ready to be automated using the hosted version.

Total Recall

JV-XP Editor lets you edit all the Patch, Performance, Rhythm, Part and several System parameters (up to 13657 parameters!) and save the latest edit status within the application. This means that you can easily recall the latest status of the previous edit simply by opening JV-XP Editor.

Parameter Locking

Lock any section of the synthesizer sound engine. For instance, lock Tone 1 Wave section and Amplitude Envelope. When loading or receiving a
new patch, the locked sections will not change. Do you like the effect settings of a Part, or the filter section? Lock them and test any patch with those settings.

Patch Randomizer

JV-XP Editor provides a Patch Randomizer with several functions to control the process. It can be used together with Parameter Locking section to select which groups of parameters will be randomized.

…and many more features like the Joystick Modulator (choose up to four parameters from any part and modulate them in a vectorial style), copy & paste Tones and Patches, multi-tone editing, scalable GUI, quick access buttons to change the effects source of a Performance, 11 skins to choose…

Fixes  v1.0.12 (27/10/2020)

• Fixed a bug that didn’t restore the correct values for Pan and Volume settings on Performance Parts.
• Fixed a bug causing the name of the performance not being saved. Thanks to gate4free for pointing out both bugs.

Fixes  v1.0.11 (20/03/2020)

• Added a lot of Rhythym sets from expansion cards that were missing. Thanks to  user Jungle for pointing out.
• Fixed Piano Expansion card patch list and typo. Thanks to Jungle again.
• Fixed a bug that could result in the background not drawing.

Fixes  v1.0.10 (9/11/2018)

• Fixed a bug that, when selecting a value bigger than 174 for parameter “Wave Select”, the output was always the default wave 001 AC Piano1 A.
•  Changed the way “STATUS” works. Previously, an Identity Request Message was used, but it was only recognized by a few members of the JV-XP family. Now a new Parameter Request is used to be compatible with all models. To know if the synth is ONLINE, you have to click over STATUS (it’s not auto-updated as before).
• Added a menu to change the UI zoom scale.

Fixes  v1.0.9 (16/04/2018)

• Fixed a bug causing the wave of the selected Tone from the selected Patch not being loaded properly.

Fixes  v1.0.8 (01/04/2018)

• Patch copy was broken.
• Added missing “Load Patch” and “Save Patch As” options in Part buttons.

Fixes  v1.0.7 (24/03/2018)

• Fixed a issue that could produce data loss when switching between Performance mode and Patch mode if the Part selected was other than Part 1.

1. OK, here’s another strange issue.

If I select Performance Mode and hit ‘Get Data’ the Editor begins transferring all the current parameters for the Performance currently selected on the JV2080, minus EFX B and EFX C as stated above.

If I select Patch Mode the JV2080 switches into Patch Mode. I then hit ‘Get Data’, and nothing happens, well there’s a slight pause, the Midi Message LED on the JV2080 flashes once but nothing else happens, the Patch Parameters aren’t transferred into the Editor.

Am I doing something stupid again?

2. Hi spiffo.

The first part is probably a bug, I’ll look into it.

“Get data” is used to get the whole data structure, not just a single patch (anyway I’ll take a look a this too, as even the Patch in Single Mode should be recalled). If you want to get a single patch/part, press “GET” button next to the Panorama knob of each part, on the left side of the editor.

3. OK, yep, the ‘GET’ Button next to the Panorama Knob transfers the Patch Data into the Editor!

That leads to another issue. I have a Patch with 3 Tones in it, everything seems to have been transferred OK except that Tone 1 Wave Group has been changed in the Transfer.

In the JV2080, Tone 1 is ‘Wave Group XP-C’ – ‘Wave Number 88’ but after I hit the ‘GET’ Button for some reason Tone 1 gets altered in the JV2080 and the Editor.

‘Wave Group XP-C’ gets swapped to ‘Internal B’

Sorry if I seem like a serial moaner 🙁

4. Which version are you using? This was a bug until version 1.09, but it could be not fixed as I thought.

No problem at all finding bugs dude, it’s something I have no time to do for myself right now, so it is welcome, thank you!!

5. This really look cool but after reading the manual I am more than confused on where to start !
Is there a tutorial on how to get started somewhere ?

Just the basics on how to save and load a patch to/from your PC and ending patches to and from the Synth

Thanks

6. Ok, yep I was running v1.08

So now testing v1.0.10 on Windows 7 with a JV-2080 on a M-Audio MidiSport 4×4 Interface.

Working:

1 In PATCH Mode, Pressing the ‘GET’ Button next to the Panorama Knob transfers the Patch Data into the Editor and the Tone 1 Wave Group is no longer changed!

2 If I select a Wave Number above 174, it now selects the correct Wave!

Other Issues:

1 Norton Anti Virus throws a fit and removes the .exe and .dll files for a WS.Reputation.1 (something about a poor reputation from users meaning it’s undesirable?) I had to exclude them and tell Norton to ignore them in future.

2 When in PERFORMANCE Mode, if I hit the ‘GET DATA’ Button (bottom left) all 16 Parts are transferred into the Editor, except occasionally one of the Parts won’t be, something goes wrong in the transfer. It seems random which makes me think it’s probably a buffering / Midi Interface type issue?

Keep up the Good Work, spiffo 🙂

7. Hi spiffo, thanks for your report.

Glad to know the first issues were solved with the new update.
About the anti virus warning, it’s not the first time I see it. I think it’s due to the fact that I modify the .exe after it’s created to change the icon (but the .dll is not modified at all and you get the warning, so who knows).

The issue about incomplete data transfer could be related, as you say, to the MIDI interface or your system. There’s a small delay between parts transfer that could be to much tight. On my system works fine, but I think I will need to add an option to change the delay time, as I did with the Virus panel, due to the same reason.

8. This is an amazingly great piece of kit. It makes working with my JV-2080 as easy and pleasing as with other high-end VST synths. Of course it helps that I have 8 exp cards fitted – especially the Vintage Synths. Thanks for the work in getting all the exp cards into the library.

If you do nothing else in this life you know that this is a ‘magnum opus’ and I have been all over the web telling everyone with an interest in the JV and XPs

The only request I could make would be to add the data card banks. A lot of us still use the data cards for storage and ‘swap meets’.

The only question is how you turned the panel / ctrlr into a combined binary???
(I have JUCE and xcode and the Steinberg sdk etc)
TIA
peter walker

9. Hi Peter.

Thanks for your words, and glad you find the editor useful.

The fact with the data card is that I don’t own one, so I can’t test it. Anyway, in theory (I could not test it) the browser has access to the card slot, at least for reading.

The binary is an option with Ctrlr, you can export to .exe and .dll for the standalone and the plugin versions.

Cheers,
Hugo

10. Surprised since Roland described it as:

“SRXpandable” via new SRX-Series 64MB* wave expansion boards
Compatible with SR-JV80-Series wave expansion boards and XP/JV-Series Patches**
Advanced arpeggiator functions
*When converted into 16-bit linear format.
**Compatible with XP-80/60/50/30, JV-2080/1080/1010.

Anyway, thanks.

11. The XV series is compatible with JV-XP series. The JV-XP series is not compatible with XV series, as well as the editor.

In fact, the synth architecture is almost identical, but the XV series include more parameters than the JVs. This few extra parameters make sysex dumps from both series different, and this editor don’t include this compatibility, it would need a complete remake.

15. Hi There
First of all – thank you for working on this editor and for making it freely available. I downloaded a couple of weeks ago and registered here to say thanks and ask a couple of questions.
My JV 1080 was from Ebay a couple of years ago but it’s only now (having just retired) I’m going to make use of it – as a hobby only.
Questions (please bear with me):
1) I assume that nothing is saved onto the JV until I write it, using the JV controls?
2) When I save to PC – do I save all user presets to disk? No Performance data is saved? In other words – what exactly is saved?
3) Is there an easy way to have a default template with all Performance slots shown Init Patch/Part?
4) Request – is it possible to have a solo button for each part in the mixer?
5) When I have a soundset loaded in the bank menu – I noticed that sometimes (and again my fault) that the patch I want to audition is loaded into the mixer. I may unknowingly double click it-how about a confirm button? If I’m not double clicking, perhaps I’m holding the button too long. I will go back and check.

Re question 3 – while in the process of changing all of the parts to Init – when I got to Part 10 the new Init bank I had set up disappeared – but also the editor froze. Had to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Having said that I expect it was my error as I know Part 10 is for Percussion. Just some feedback. Have not replicated yet.

I’m sure I’ll have more questions in time – thank you again – this software is great and appreciated.

16. Hi DaveE

Thanks for your words. I’ll try to reply your questions.

1) Your are correct. The patches transferred to the synth are not saved unless you write them on memory on the synth itself. But operations from the LIB page of the editor do write patches on the synth memory. Page 16-17 on the manual.

2) You can save many different things. Button “Save Data” store the following (page 5 on the manual):
· Current data in the Patch Mode (latest status of the edited Patch)
· Current data in the Performance Mode (consisting of Performance setup and latest status of 16 Patches, including one Rhythm part).
· Current data in the System Mode related to the Scale Tune of 16 Performance Parts and Patch Mode.

You can also store single patch/rhythm patches and soundbanks (page 17).

3) The first time the editor is opened, all patches are Init Patch. There’s also a “Init All” button (bottom right) to initialize the performance and all patches.

4) Not actually, but it could be done.

5) Double-clicking is the way it loads a patch, and also with cursor keys up/down. I don’t like the idea of adding a confirm button, it slows down the workflow.
You have also a drop down menu with all the patches from a bank, where you can use cursor keys and Enter to confirm.

Re 3) Yes, you are correct, switching to Rhythm part removes any bank loaded or created for normal patches, and vice-versa. What I never noticed was a crash doing it, but it could be possible as this has not been tested too much knowing how it behaves.

The main purpose of the editor is to use it as any other VST inside a DAW, due to the total recall thing, so there’s no need to store data directly on the synth (as it’s saved within the DAW project) and you can forget about missing patches or lack of free slots. But if you’re using it as a standalone app to edit patches, maybe there are better solutions out there with other editors.

17. Thanks dasfaker.

I have been reading the manual (honest) 🙂
I have been using it standalone, but will try the vst version soon.
Today I opened up the Don Solaris soundset I had on disk. I noticed that the pull down menu on the right of the Lib page showed a different soundset (User C).
I’ll pick up the manual again.
Thanks.

18. Edit to above:
It goes to show that sometimes we look but don’t see. I just opened the editor up and saw the Init All button, which is sort of what I was looking for 🙂

19. Hi,

Thanks so much for creating an editor / librarian for the Roland JV/XP series!!! 🙂
I own 2 XP80’s, one XP50 and an XV3080 with a very broad range of SR-JV expansionboards, and have been using these gorgeous beasts ever since they came out (as well as a Fantom X with SRX exp.boards), both live and in my studio!
I really appreciate the effort you made of keep these synths alive and kicking 🙂

Haven’t tried the editor yet, just stumbled upon it to be honest… but I just had to let you know, you know? 😉

All the very best,

Gerald Vos – keyboards, guitar & vocals August Life
Holland

20. Hi Alan

It could be a lot of things. I have none of those DAWs nor have tested the plugin there, but it works fine in Ableton Live and Cubase, so it could be related to the DAWs. What do you mean by not load the VST?

• Sure, Thanks and sorry for the long delay!
Here is the foundation:
I have a wonderful JV-1010 and my controller is a good old M-Audio Oxygen Silver (I expect to upgrade it this year) and I’m on Linux (Ubuntu Studio).
I am very happy with your editor, but I find some bugs or details that I believe are more related to running it on Linux over Wine than on the editor itself … and also I’d like to manipulate parameters directly from Oxygen sliders/knobs/buttons, but Oxygen can be only programmed on those to send CCs and not SysEx (required to go deep into the JV as you perfectly know and handle with your editor).
So, ideas are:
1. If you might share your panel source with me I’d try to:
a. Compile it on Linux, to return back to you 100% as received so you can distribute your great job for Linux in addition to Windows.
b. If I find any problem on that compilation (there should be none) I can review with you and help you fix it.
c. I expect that compilation may fix all details I have found, Including the possibility to try something similar to the VST and try to automate controls from Oxygen (sounds pretty hard to achieve, thou).
2. I could start building an Editor/Controller/Translator to catch msgs from Oxygen and send adjusted SysEx to the JV-1010 and achieve live parameter editing of sounds from the Oxygen thru this! … Also challenging but very interesting and hopefully I will make it work, with credits for your support of course! I might even try to replicate the great view of yours on this ( I like it a lot over the default views of Ctrlr I have seen so far 🙂 ) This may take time, but I’d like to give it a try.
I’ll try to repeat this on msg to you and see if it works now.
Expecting your comments… and thanks in advance!

• I’m also on Linux and have two 1010’s (one is at a shared studio with also a Linux based DAW setup).

The main issue I have with the 1010 is that it does not support patch-dump response to sysex (can only do a manual send of performance settings). Which makes syncing the editor to the unit impossible.

Otherwise the editor seems to work ok with wine, but a native version would be really nice (or maybe even a native vst).
Would be happy to help test such an effort.

21. Hi dasfaker, your panel looks brilliant and I am really into trying it, on a mac. I’ve noticed several requests before, so I’m hesitating to ask…so is there anything I can do assisting u in translating the panel? Please note that I am not a programmer, but I do have a lot of patience and a PhD that should allow me to perform some more complex tasks (as compared to playing rock with my friends) 😉
wishing u all well
Grtz

22. Hi ArjanN

Over the years I’ve send just this panel to at least 6 people who offered to do the same as you, port the panel to Mac or Linux and send it back.

I’m still awaiting something from any of them. It’s clear to me that people is only interested in themselves.

I think you will be my last attempt to believe that there’s still someone willing to help.

BTW, the procedure to convert the panel is as simple as opening the panel in Ctrlr and save it.
I’ll send you a PM

23. Can anyone help me to understand how to configure this in Cubase in Windows? I tried Ableton at first, but for some reason Ableton doesn’t natively support SYSEX so I changed over to Cubase 10. I can get the VST to read SYSEX messages I’ve recorded into Cubase, but I can’t get the VST to go “online.”

I’m using virtual midi ports to get around the Windows issue of multiple programs accessing midi ports, but I can’t get the VST to function completely smoothly.

Standalone works just fine, so my hardware set up should be good. I just need a hand beyond what the manual says about how to configure the DAW and VST. Please, the standalone works so well I just want to get it up and running fully!

24. I have wrapper that I was able to get fully functional in Mac OS X 10.16.3 High Sierra.

25. I have wrapper that I was able to get fully functional in Mac OS X 10.16.3 High Sierra. This wrapper is only a stand alone app version. I have no vst or au wrapper at this time and solutions for that are annoying difficult to implement. I will post updates concerning the release of this wrapper. I want to give Dasfaker some time to get in touch with me (I tried messaging in several places only just recently). As the author of the panel, Dasfaker may have a perspective on the release of a wrapper and may prefer another solution for Mac users. The Wine wrapper system is finicky and it too some playing around with settings to make it work. I don’t suspect it will work for everyone. It is certainly a less than ideal solution for Mac users. It would be much better to have OSX app, vst and au files generated from the panel.

26. Dasfaker generously worked on a MacOS X version for us. I have been authorized to release it to you. Disclaimer, this version has possible graphical glitches that will most likely go away if you just change the skin when you open the interface (you can return the skin to any one you wish, but at least switch it once). This has been tested in OS X High Sierra 10.13.6. It has not been tested in Mojave or Catalina. Included in this download is the MacOS X app, AU plugin and VST plugin. The panel is not released and there are no plans to release it.

http://uploaded.net/file/h81f03ju

• In fact, you are the one who generously spent a great amount of your time to port the editor, not just for your own interest, but for the benefit of all.

So BIG thanks to you!!

• My pleasure, you were awesome to work with. He’s being humble, very little was needed to do. But thanks! I don’t have a lot of space or money for hardware, but the JV-1010 I have has been worth every penny and time I’ve spent on it.

27. Hi!
This is my first post (from italy, Rome); in this time of Coronavirus i am satisfied working with my 1080; i use the editor with 16 midi output and i love it, but the problem is that when i restart the daw (sequoia) and reload the saved project with the performance mode sound, in a first moment i have the rights Patches, but after two seconds the plugin sends signal to my 1080 and i have the initialize patch (standard piano) until the saved Patches.
Can you help me? Thank you very much and sorry for my non correct english!
(It says that the hardware is offline)

28. Hello everyone, first of all, thanks so much to everyone involved for creating this. Finding an editor for my 2080 has been the bane of my existence, but it was impossible for me to ever get one to work. The CTRLR one was the last one I hadn’t tried because I was running OSX, so I was very pleased to see there was a port. But no luck, I just can’t get it to work, whatever I try, neither the standalone nor the VST.

If in standalone I select the MIDI ports that I think are the correct ones, my 2080 receives MIDI Messages as the light keeps blinking rhythmically. But I have no idea what triggers it. If I select another output device the light stops. I read the manual a few times but I have no idea what to select at the thru tab also, etc. If there is anyone who can help me, that would be great!

29. Hello, please disregard my post above, it was a user error… You can delete it!

So, everything works now, but, the Mac version is very buggy. If I want to choose a different wave for a tone, the drop down menu doesn’t go away anymore, and I’m not able to click on anything. Does this sound familiar? I’m running El Capitan, but both the VST and the stand alone have it. I’m running the plugin in Ableton 10.

• Yes the Mac version suffers some graphical issues that, based on several posts from Ctrlr users, seems to be specific to OS X. Perhaps when these issues seem to be corrected in a new version of Ctrl, this can be fixed. For now, some graphical problems can go away at the time they appear if you switch the skin (you can return then return it to what you want).

If you are are referring to the 193 entries in the middle top section of the wave menu (mine shows “001 Kalimba” when I run), then I am not having that issue on the OS X application (plugins might have different issues).

30. Please can you point out what idiocy I am guilty of as I cannot make it work ..?

It loads in Cubase 10 and I disabled the ports so the ports open in the editor. I play the controller keyboard or the virtual keyboard and the JV 2080 plays, however it will nor recognise changes made via the editor.

It will not Get data – I checked the cables and ports by doing a dump via MidiOx, but the editor will not get any data from the JV.

I tried in standalone mode as well …

Settings on the JV are correct.

It looks great, but I cannot get it to work!

• You may have already tried this, but, I suggest trying to get the application to work first with changing the MIDI settings. You might have to try a few things to get it to work (I did, but it could have just been my not understanding my setup and the editor). Once the application was working, I had no problem with the plugins. I think this might eliminate the editor MIDI settings as the cause and that way you can focus on trying things in your DAW. Sorry if you already tried all that, I don’t know about Cubase.

31. This is brilliant! one issue I’m unable to get to work re midi thru… I have turned off local switch on the XP-60 so the keyboard only triggers sound via ctrlr. Only way I found to do this was to select In > Out device in midi routing. However, in performance mode when I select one of the 16 parts I would expect the input channel from the keyboard to be routed to the selected output channel? (the virtual image of a keyboard does indeed play the sound on the channel selected). But the physical keyboard input just keep getting output on the same channel. I have tried ticking & unticking the change midi channel option in midi settings (and multiple permutations) but I can’t get the thru output to be routed to a different channel controlled by the editor. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? many thanks

32. Hello, love this editor! Thanks for all the work you have done and for providing this to the community. I have a jv-1080 and a jv2080, both hooked up to my micro lite interface. How can I switch easily from one jv to the other without having to re-enter the expansion boards in each time? Is there a “Save MIDI setup” anywhere? Again, thank you!

• I don’t think there is that function. However, before you run the editor you could switch between to setup files. The file “JV-XP Editor.settings” is located in /Users/*yourusername*/Library/Preferences/JV-XP Editor. That is for Mac. I think that the plugins and app all share the same settings. I am not sure where the files is located on Windows, but you could try /Users/*yourusername*/Documents/JV-XP Editor. Once you find the location of the file change the settings to the JV-1080 and remove the instance of the plug-in or better yet, use the application and quit it. Then make a copy of the “JV-XP Editor.settings” file and rename it to “JV-XP Editor (JV-1080).settings” or something like that. Do the same for the JV-2080. Then to switch delete “JV-XP Editor.settings”, copy/duplicate the file of the version of the settings you want and rename it to “JV-XP Editor.settings.” You could make two scripts to do this for you if you know how. Sorry, that is the best thing I can think of that you could do to save some time.

33. I’ve been using this editor with Wine on Linux and it works pretty well, but a native build would be even better 🙂

(I’ve been trying to build Ctrlr from source using JUCE and that’s been a pain in the *ss though)

• So, I’ve been playing with it a bit some more. Got a 1080 some time ago, which allows for patch dumps and thus more control compared to the 1010.

However I’m having an issue with loading saved data, it seems that the patch data is not properly loaded. I only hear an init-patch and not the patch that I created and saved. The name I saved it as also does not appear.

Also it seems the editor does not remember the expansion cards that I configured for my unit (I have all 4 slots filled). Or at least it doesn’t show them. When I select the waveforms they do seem to be used, and it doesn’t complain that they are not present. This seems to be a visualization bug then.

34. Is the download link correct? It’s always taking me to some German site with pictures of erotic looking female cartoons. Trying to download the panel but no luck thus far! What am I doing wrong?

35. Thank you so much for making the mac version.

It seems that there is a bug and it does not work properly.
Do you have the best setting among them?
I am running vst version on ableton and JV-1080.
Please excuse my poor English.
