midi in keyboard controller

so i’ve been living with it for a while, even added a keyboard ui element to my panel w/i ctrlr to work around it but I really am at a point where when deving in ctrlr I’d love to be able to actually use a midi controller keyboard to trigger notes within ctrlr..

am i missing something obvious besides setting the midi devices in the general "Devices" icon and setting the midi in to whatever Midi port my external keyboard is plugged into in the "MIDI Input Device" selector within the attribute editor for my panel? I’ve got everything sending and receiving on ch 1 and im using a very basic midi interface for this dev work – m-audio midisport 2×2.. whoohoo.
