Midi Editor for Access Virus TI OS 5.0.8

A version of Access Virus Control for those who want a midi-only standalone or vst editor. No more sync problems, pops and clicks.

It works in Single and Sequencer Mode.

Virus TI Snow Ctrlr Panel_Browser· Librarian
Load and save individual patches in .syx format.
Load and save patches from/to soundbanks in .syx and .mid format.
Load ROM and RAM banks.

*Not compatible with patches from Virus A, B and C.

Virus TI Snow Ctrlr Panel_Browser· Section Locking.

Lock any section of the Virus sound engine. For instance, lock Oscillator 1 and Amplitude Envelope. When loading or receiving a new patch, the locked sections will not change. Do you like the effect settings of a patch, or the arpeggiator pattern? Lock them and test any patch with those settings. Forget about random generators.

· Automation of every parameter of the sound engine

In Access Virus Control there are some parameters that can’t be automated. With this panel it’s possible to automate every parameter.

· Compatible with Virus TI Desktop, Keyboard, Polar and Snow

· Virus Setup

· EDIT CONFIG → Receive MIDI Dump -> Receive Dump: Enabled

· EDIT CONFIG → Midi 3/3 -> Program Change: Enabled

· EDIT CONFIG → MIDI Control → Page A: Controller Data

· EDIT CONFIG → MIDI Control → Page B: SysEx

Set MIDI Device ID to the same value on the panel and on the Virus (Changing this value in the panel doesn’t change the value in the Virus, as there is not a sysex message to modify this parameter).

If you are using the VST version inside a DAW, and your MIDI interface drivers are not multi-client, you will need to disable these ports in the DAW and use them exclusively for Ctrlr.

· Using the Browser
[New in version 3.3]The first time a bank is selected in the browser the panel will request the patches of this bank from the Virus, creating an index for each bank, so the next time the same bank is selected there will be no patch dumps.

To request again a bank that has been indexed, click “Sync Banks” button and select the bank.

To copy a patch, select the patch and press Copy.
To paste a patch to an external bank, press Store and select the desired slot.
To store the edit buffer in an external bank, open a bank, press Store and select the desired slot.

  1. Hi there,

This works great as a standalone, but whenever I use it as a VST and open the panel, it says ‘ImportResource resource: Virus2_ARP_Fillfailed, a resource with this name already exists’ and goes through the next hundred / thousand ARP settings with similar messages. What am I doing wrong?!

  2. The next Ctrlr nightly should have this fixed. In the meantime, you can save the panel (File -> Save As). This panel with .panel extension will not try to import again and again the resources.

  3. Thanks. I’ve got it working fine now – it sends and receives data fine from the Virus. However I’m really having a hard time loading patches. Even selecting Ram 1+2 and waiting for the bulk dump sends an entire batch of mislabelled patches – when I click on any of them, nothing changes (no OSC / Filter changes, nothing in the sound). They’re definitely speaking to each other as when I move the cutoff in CTRLR it changes the sound, and when I press ‘GET’ to obtain the current patch the virus does send a sysex message.. yet still nothing changes. I’m going a bit mad here, do you have any idea why this might be please?

  4. PS – I’ve even recorded a sysex file from the Virus and tried to ‘LOAD’ it from the panel, but still no dice – nothing changes at all, it still displays ‘INIT’.

  5. I’ll upload a new update in a few hours, fixing some issues in the Browser.
Make sure the Virus accepts midi dumps (Config -> Midi -> Midi Dump RX -> Receive Dump: Enabled.
If midi dumps aren’t enabled, the whole browser part of the panel will not work.

BTW, Are you using Snow or Desktop panel?

  6. dasfaker, amazing work 🙂 ive almost got it working! the messages that are sent as midi controller data work as they should but System exclusive messages sent from ctrlr dont have any effect on the virus and when System exclusive messages are sent from the virus to the panel they dont change anything.

    what am i missing?
    best
    Al

  7. thank you dasfaker. this will finally let me use my virus with a mac again via, of course, midi connection. damn usb, damn access~

    just edited this panel…
    – for larger fonts where i found it was necessary. (zoom in does not enlarge fonts, should be like that?) now it is much better for reading. but may still need to zoom in a few times for comfortable reading, depending on monitor used.
    – invisible “index” parameter in OSC 2 is now visible.

wish i can upload this edited panel to this page, so some may use it, but i don’t think i can do that. if someone wants it, perhaps i can send this file to dasfaker so he can upload it?

and thanks again to atom! by the way, zoom in (zoom out works) keyboard shortcut on mac version does not work, if you are reading this…

  8. Hi iii

I’m glad you can use the panels to solve your issues with the Virus.

I will only maintain the two panels (Snow and non Snow) posted here. As the panels are open source, you can make any change you want to them, but they will not be handled by me (Imagine any of you make a change in the panel, there could be countless versions of the same panel). I hope you understand it.

Access don’t allow me to use their graphics in my panel, so I’m making a new skin. Any future change or bug fix will be made only on the two panels posted here.

on my mac, some parameters are very hard to read, because the fonts look small and fuzzy. i thought, if that happens to other computers, it is better to be addressed. and future editions / version could be build on the edit. (maybe save you a half hour or so)

i was not trying to create a new version. the panel looks beautiful already.
and i felt that creating another page for this panel was not necessary at all.
definitely, there only needs to be one nice panel per device.

does the fonts in the panel look comfortable and clear for reading on your system? are you using pc?

i am amazed again by access! you should be getting full support and presented at least with an appreciation sticker and a six pack! you did what they should have done a long time ago. seriously, what are they thinking?

  10. Hi iiii

I have no problems at all to read the texts (otherwise I would have increased the font size). Yes, I’m on pc. Surely in the new retina displays on Mac it will be too small. I see now that zooming in don’t increase the menu’s font size
The fonts are of the same size as in the real Virus Control, but they are a bit blurred sometimes (it’s something out of my control and Atom’s control, it’s a Juce thing).

About Access, I don’t understand their position. Many people have problems with the Total Integration thing and they should have done a version of Virus Control over midi.

  11. Hi,

I have Windows XP ,Cubase 5 and Virus TI.
I have a problem when loading panel. I get warning messages:”ImportResource: Virus2_ARP_Fillfailed, a resource with this name already exists.” If I press ok, another comes up. About 100. Do you have any idea to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

  12. Hi, this is so great. so far so good, but one small issue. in logic pro i can set up the vst instrument channel, and the audio channel. but, after i record some midi notes on the channel, when i hit playback the midi is not triggering the synth? so the midi notes aren’t playing the synth? any ideas?

  13. how do the midi control #s apply in the automation pulldown in logic pro? in the virus manual a 59 is the number to automate the amp env attack. that’s not what it is on the automation pulldown on the vst track when i have ctrlr loaded on the track.

  14. 1. Try to activate “Thru from host to device” in the panel midi settings.
    2. Automation parameters do not follow the same numeration as cc’s or sysex messages. I don’t work with Logic so I can’t help here. In other daws you can see the name of each automation parameter.

  15. Hi dasfaker,

Basically, the work you’ve done here is superb and could potentially be a godsend to my endless sync issues with my TI.

But, I’ve tried to get it to work with OS X 10.8 and Live 9, and am having some rather frustrating issues.

Firstly the standalone version and the vst don’t seem to communicate with the Virus at all, but the AU does albeit sporadically.

I’m using the latest build of Ctrlr for OSX (1352).

Firstly after loading the panel, I select for both in and out Device Virus TI Synth on channel 1.

At this point I can both get and send patches to the synth, but any parameters I move on either, don’t update in real time. I have to click send or get to update. At one point, remarkably it just worked for no apparent reason, all except for the patch browser. The patch browser just says no communication with the TI when selecting a bank, and I did make sure to set the device id and global channel on both the virus and the plugin…

I really want this to work, it’s just what I need.

Also, in Live, should I be setting the MIDI Track, Sync or Remote for the ins/outs. I mean, the Virus is gonna be out of sync if it doesn’t get timing information from live right?
Hope to hear from you soon on what a mess I’ve made of it. Also maybe you could put some simple instructions on how to set up in your desc, so we don’t have to wade through Ctrlr’s manual.

Sorry about the long post, hope it’s clear enough.

    Thanks,

    Vors

  16. If there is communication you should be able to send, receive and modify parameters. If there is no communication, nothing will work. It’s strange you can send and receive but not change modulators, this could be a bug with the latest osx revision.
About the sync or remote question, as far as I know it doesn’t matter.
And about the instructions, they are explained on the top of the page (Virus Setup) and in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peeSnNucwpM

  17. Thanks you SO much for the development work on this panel, simply outstanding.

I have tested extensively but have a few issues and some aspects working great. Major problem in that I cannot load banks.

    Mac OSX 10.8.5
    Ctrlr 1653
    Virus TI Desktop 5.0.3.00
    Ableton Live 9.1 x64
On Panel Plugin Host > Output Device Enabled
    No USB
Connected over Midi In & Out to Motu 828Mk3 Virus TI.
Audio out from Virus TI to Motu via SPDIF @ 48K
    Output in Panel is Off

AU of Ctrlr does not allow opening of any panels, all options greyed out.
    VST allows opening of panel.
Is there any way to automatically load the Virus Panel when the VST is loaded, including sizing of the panel if enlarged?
Drop Down menus have tiny text almost unreadable.
Error when loading banks. See attached.
Running in Sequencer Mode. using Live 9.1
Cannot Load .MID banks, all greyed out
Config -> Receive MIDI Dump -> Receive Dump: Enabled on Virus
Midi Device ID=1 as on Virus
Midi Control Page A=Controller Data, Page B=Sysex on Virus TI
Transmit MIDI Dump on Virus TI. Should this be set to any particular value?

    Get works
    changing patches on virus works
    Adjusting knobs on Virus works
    Adjusting parameters in Panel works
Recording MIDI and playback works including recording automation from Virus TI Desktop, but not by adjusting parameters on Panel.

    • The last Ctrlr build that doesn’t mess the Browser is 1590, all newer versions use Juce 3.0 and this is not fully supported by Ctrlr right now.

About the small text when you zoom the panel is something I can’t do anything, as far as I know the panel don’t know the zoom level so I can’t adjust the font size.

  18. Hiya ,

Great program , I just have a slight problem . I’ve connected my virus snow up via midi in and out to my m audio sound card. In standalone mode I select virus snow panel in ctrl and then do as you said from the YouTube video. But when I click get I get a lua message saying error ect. I’m using version 1665 I think the one right at the bottom on the downloads page.

  19. Well i have an m audio 2496 card , and when opening my daw and in standalone mode, i select Delta midi on the input. Then delta midi for the output and it has a smiley face for both options then when i press get it says “midiMessageReceived

    lua runtime error
    At line [-1] : [c]
    What : c
    Method
    setmodulatorvalue
no matching overload found candidates void setmodulatorvalue

    Thanks

    Craig

  20. Still get the same message i checked the version build and it says 1590 in the about bit and downloaded the snow panel above 🙁 i looked at the virus and its setup like you said on the youtube video.

    Thanks

    Craig

    • No problem 😉
But I can’t reproduce this error. I’m on Xp 32 bits too, using Ctrlr rev. 1590 inside Ableton Live with both Virus panels, and they send and receive without errors.

I’ve seen this kind of error previously and is caused when a class has changed and the code needs to be reworked, so it’s odd seeing that with rev. 1590.
Try uninstalling every Ctrlr version and reinstall 1590, I can’t think of another solution right now.

  21. Ok thanks mate 🙂 will try it again the arp seems to be syncing again in virus control and fl studio , my virus must be in a good mood lol no aggressive beats haha will try again though mate thanks

  22. Hi again dasfaker

Well I’ve persisted trying to get this panel working, to get rid of the snap crackle and pop I get with VC over USB. I’m so close to having a stable virus with the panel now!! I can load banks and patches, I can automate parameters and play live over midi and TRS analog. I seem to be left with two stumbling block I’m hoping you can help with? Getting the virus to Sync with Live and using multi timbal parts.

    1. With no USB connected can the TI desktop panel (not Snow) sync with the Virus, so if for example I increase the BPM in live the virus TI arps BPM will increase? What is required to sync without USB? Does this require midi clock sync over SPDIF? Any particular settings required in live or the panel? All midi track/sync/remote inputs and outputs for the Virus TI are off in Live. On your video it shows connecting the panels input and output device to ‘Virus TI Synth’ which I believe is only present when connected via USB. I connect to the input and output to my Motu midi port, where my virus connects to. Can’t get them to sync!! There isn’t a BPM light on the Virus TI panel like there is on the video for the snow panel. Could this be added? How would the TI sync with live? Any pointers to getting them syncing? In the arp section of the panel I can change anything and it doesn’t change the playing arp at all.

    2. On the panel I can get a patch playing nicely with no pops!! Using output 1/2 over TRS, but when I go to selected parts 2 or 3 of the multi timbal part on the panel and they using outputs 3/4 or 5/6 they refuse to work (and the cables are plugged in!!) only 1/2 seems to output. Any ideas?

    Many thanks, much appreciated

    Mac OSX 10.8.5
    Ctrlr 1590 AU
    Virus TI Desktop 5.0.3.00
    Ableton Live 9.1 x64
On Panel Plugin Host > Output Device Enabled
Connected over Midi In & Out to Motu 828Mk3 Virus TI.
Audio out from Virus TI to Motu via analog TRS 1/2, 3/4, 5/6

  23. Hi kwtsh.

The light in the video is the led of the Virus Snow. I overlaid the Virus screen recording on top of the screen capture when I did the video and the light remained, my bad.

I did reply the other questions on your post of access-music forum.

  24. dasfaker, thank you for the great panel! It solves all my Virus TI related problems.

I think I found two small bugs when using it though. Maybe it’s my system but I don’t think so since everything else is working fine. They are:

    1. Osc 3 controls don’t work
    2. When using the browser, loading Ram-B gives me an error message but loading other banks work.

I’m using Ctrlr 1590 and panel version 4.1. I’m on PC and I have a Virus TI2 with OS 5.0.8.00.

I’m no good with programming otherwise I would try to fix the bugs myself. Do you think it would be possible for you to take a look? Thanks in advance!
