Very good suggestion Zeoka! Thanks for your input. I’ll do some experiments today and report back findings. Keen to get the deprecated Yamaha An1X panel to working and also the Access Virus TI panel!

I guess no replies could mean this isn’t possible … bit of a shame since some panels won’t work with recent nightly builds yet my MKS80 panel won’t work with builds prior 1655. Not complaining of course since CTRLR is awesome and free – loving the integration possibilities it brings into my setup.

          Hi there!

Yes indeed, CTRLR allows this with it’s panels. I’ve been enjoying tweaking and editing my MKS80 from the couch using my Push controller.

In order to ensure Modulators on your panel will make themselves available in Ableton’s Configure function for each Modulator ensure the following settings are made for your CTRLR Panel:
          – “Export Paramater to VST host” is enabled/ticked (this should be enabled by default for modulators you add)
          – VST Index for each modulator needs to be unique (this let’s you set the order in which Modulators are presented to the host)

Note that each time you launch your CTRLR/Panel inside of Ableton you’ll need to use the Configure function in Ableton again in order to have the Panel’s Modulators be made available to Push. There is a great way to save yourself time from having to do this repeatedly.

          0) In Ableton’s MIDI Preferences panel, ensure the MIDI ports you have your synth connected to are not enabled for “Track/Sync/Remote” (i.e. CTRLR communicates to your MIDI ports directly rather than via Ableton – you don’t want Ableton interfering with communications since it will strip out SysEx data which is the very reason why we love using CTRLR since it fixes that issue very neatly!).

          1) Launch CTRLR within an Ableton MIDI track and load your Panel.

          2) Configure the MIDI Input and Output port and channel settings appropriately within CTRLR for your synth. Set the MIDI Thru functions in CTRLR so that the following are ticked “plugin host -> Output Device” and “Change channel Plugin Host -> Output device”. These last two setttings are important since the CTRLR plugin will then “Thru” MIDI notes incoming from your controller keyboard (Push) and sequence data in the track directly to your MIDI synth.

          3) Using Live’s Configure function engaged, click all the modulators in your CTRLR Panel that you want available for tweaking from your Push. Do them in an order whereby it makes functional sense and consider that Push lets you see banks of parameters in groups of 8 simultaneously (e.g. good idea to encourage ADSR envelope parameters to begin on a bank of 8, etc).

          4) Now … add Live’s External Audio Effect built-in plugin after CTRLR and configure the audio input setting of that plugin so that it matches the audio input you have your synth connected to. This is how you can easily route the sound of your external hardware synth back into the track (and will make the track Freezable).

          5) In the plugin strip view in Ableton, Shift + click the header of the CTRLR plugin and External Audio Effect plugins so they are both selected and then right click and select “Group” … This will make an Instrument rack.

          6) Drag the header of the Instrument rack into your Ableton User Library and name it after the synth (e.g. Roland MKS80 for me) …

          7) Close your project

          8) Start a new project and load the preset you made at step 6 into an empty MIDI track … without messing about with MIDI channel settings for the track or routing audio from the synth, you’ll have a convenient means of recalling all of the settings you’ve made in previous steps above …

TIP: Using Ableton’s track Freeze function you can Freeze your hardware synth with the same ease as a VST instrument and then launch more instances of it.
          ; )

          Enjoy!

OK if you’re hearing sound with cans connected to the headphone output of your Virus Snow then you can expect the sound to get into your audio interface once you get appropriate cabling.

Personally I’m a huge fan of my Universal Audio Apollo Quad as my choice of audio interface which I use with Ableton Live 9 x64 on MacOS10.8.6. It’s a great partner for bigger collections of hardware synths being run via CTRLR (expensive but awesome) however there are a plethora of musician-grade audio interfaces available for around $200 which give you multiple inputs on 1/4″ jacks with proper low-latency ASIO driver support (only needed for Windows based setups).

Anyhow – good to hear you are getting your Snow to play ball with the panel!
Shame on Virus for failing to deliver reliable audio streaming (USB1 is problematic for audio streaming) that completes the “Total Integration” feature advertised.

Once I have my Virus TI Polar going with the CTRLR panel available here I’ll be happy to help you troubleshoot further … Since you have MIDI comms working (as you mention above), hate to ask a potentially silly question, however have you connected the regular audio outputs of your Snow to the audio inputs on your soundcard or are you expecting sound to flow out of your Snow via the USB connection (I don’t think that will work since by using CTRLR you are sidestepping the USB/Audio TI integration in order to get around the problems you’ve experienced using Access’s own audio stream back to host). Are you using an audio interface? I ask only because you make no mention above that you have one in your setup. Do you hear sound from your Snow if headphones are connected to it directly?

ok here is your panel with the knobman rendered knobs and sliders, enjoy :)

                  mks-80 programmer

of course this means i’m going to have to aquire an mks-80 now. lol

                  Howdy Layzer,

I actually have the new background graphic completed for the version which gives both Upper and Lower tone editing however this required resizing of the whole GUI and thus subsequently those great looking knobs/switches you made for me in Knobman no longer fit.

Any chance you could either send me the source Knobman files you made for me originally? I’m having difficulty replicating those nice alpha-blended drop shadows to look as good as the ones you did. 🙂

Otherwise, if you have a little time to spare and I’ll send over the latest version panel file and maybe you could work your magic again on my behalf?

                  Cheers

                    Hey guys!

I was very excited to hear about the panel for the mks-80 would be out soon. But there are no news since the alpha version was released on February 26. Will there be a final version?

                    Hi dnbpsy,

Glad you’re interested in the MKS80 panel. It may be labelled as an alpha version however it is actually fully functional (the latest version being available within the Panel download area on this site) – thus development has slowed since I’ve been having too much fun making use of it!

My current development phase is to implement simultaneous editing of both the Upper and Lower tones simultaneously as the existing version targets the Upper tone only. Actually behind the scenes I have completed making the new background GUI to accommodate this (I had to rescale graphics to make it fit sensibly!). I’m just finishing resizing the Knob and Switch graphics to fit the new GUI and then I’ll upload it.

Long term, I will be implementing some LUA methods to do bulk parameter dumps back and forth from the unit.

For the moment however, if you’re the kind of guy that loves making new patches from scratch for each new tune (that’s me!) it works perfectly as a one-way editor and will allow making Snapshots and spitting them at the MKS80.

Download it and take it for a spin!

                    Cheers

Thanks for the update on Snapshots/ProgramManager Atom and great news to hear you’re generating more doco for CTRLR.

Incidentally, I’m just wandering what is different about some panels which allow taking Snapshots (example: my MPG80 Emulation) while others do not (example: Korg DW8000 panel).

Is it due to the version of CTRLR available at the time when the author of the panel created it? Just curious since I have snapshots working well with my MKS80.

I’m wandering if there is anything which can be done to get more reliable Snapshot recall for the version of the DSI Mopho panel included within the CTRLR installation – it’s a bit random at the moment.

                      Cheers!

I think I may consider doing a rebuild of it? Maybe it was developed using a much earlier build of CTRLR which doesn’t play ball well with recent builds. Ideally I desire for all Panels I use to provide 100% reliable Snapshot recall so I can completely avoid using hardware synth memory locations then I can reliably use DAW Freeze functions and freely use multiple instances of any synth I have only one of. 😉

Well that was an insightful read and would explain why I’m having issues making sense of the MIDI SysEx activity that is coming from Sound Diver (weird byte packing, etc). Perhaps I will attack this synth later as my CTRLR experience and skill improves.

                                Cheers

Syn-Fi – thanks for your info. The FIZMO manual is of little help in terms of SysEx implementation that’s for sure! I have Sound Diver communicating successfully with the FIZ via a VMWare virtualised instance of Windows 7 on my Mac Book Pro and can watch the data fly back and forth in its MIDI monitor. It’s going to be much more complex a job than the MKS80 but hey, a CTRLR panel will make this synth a heck of a lot more useful to me.

Really excited to hear there is interest in a CTRLR panel for the FS1R – it’s an amazing sounding synth and very unique. I’ve always wanted to add one to the arsenal and a CTRLR panel for it will motivate me even further to seek one down!

                                    Cheers

Hi Zeko regarding your snap to default value feature request … it’s already there – at the top of the Component properties for a modulator you will find “uiSliderDoubleClickEnabled” (make sure it’s ticked) and “uiSliderDoubleClickValue” (set it to your preferred default value).

For the panels I’m making, my strategy is that by double clicking on all controls you end up with a good “Initial” patch.

Wish I could help you with the other stuff but I’m just learning to build in CTRLR myself.

                                      Cheers
